Off the Cuff: Winter 2024

Fall and winter are my favorite seasons. Do I like the salt on my car or wind blistered cheeks? No. BUT I do love knits and artistically layering pieces for that perfect sense of expression. So let’s dive into this winter’s trends.

Carry-Over

The burgundy and chocolate hues from the early fall will follow us through the snowy season and for good reason. Not only are the colors bold against pale skies and crisp snow, but they look cozy, as in color therapy “look.”

The cutesy coquette and “Gilmore Girl Fall” styles seem to be sticking as well. For those not in the loop, coquette style often includes a mix of preppy silhouettes mixed with pastels, and lots of bows.

Gilmore Girl Fall refers to the Rory Gilmore aesthetic from the insanely popular 2000s TV series. She often wears low rise jeans with baby tees, chunky sweaters and boots, and a classic thin 90s scarf. (Look it up and you’ll know what I’m talking about immediately.)

The Rory Gilmore aesthetic often has a relaxed preppy vibe.

Trench coats are as timeless as can be and will be yet another staple in any fall to winter wardrobe. The slight difference this season is that army greens are making a comeback, but don’t worry. That camel brown trench from 2016 is still perfect even if sage green is all the rage.

Another timeless piece in any wardrobe is the mid-calf or knee boot, but the last two fall and winter seasons have seen a rise in pointed and square toes over rounded toes. Think Devil Wears Prada points and cowgirl square toes. These boots have been trendy, though varied, for years and we won’t see them going anywhere any time soon.

New and Upcoming

Maybe this is a lapse on my end, but I did not include loafers and Mary Janes in my Fall Edit of Off The Cuff because I believed it was a fleeting Pinterest trend. Low and behold, I was wrong, and the shoes have stuck through the fall and will most likely slip into winter. Of course, they aren't the most practical once it snows, but until then we will see them, likely paired with tights.

Like I mentioned with Gilmore Girl Fall, scarves are on the rise. Chunky scarves are great for the cold, but the most popular scarves right now are the mid-sized ones; not a thin 90s Phoebe look, but not the swallowed by my scarf look either. The happy medium that can transition from chic indoors to useful outside is what’s most popular. Next time you pull that scarf from the back of the closet, flick one side over your shoulder and hold your head up, because baby it’s back in style!

Writer’s Note: I was a huge fan of the thin to mid-sized scarf as a tween and was picked on for it. Guess I was ahead of my time, lol.

Cozy up and pair your scarf with some warm knits! Personally, I don’t believe knitwear ever goes out of style, but hey what do I know. It’s hard to go wrong with a classic sweater and if you haven’t read my thrift tips now may be the time. Sweaters litter every thrift store I’ve ever been to, and vintage knits are easier to find than you’d think.

A sweater I’ve seen a lot of from H&M and Zara to Walmart and Target are mock necks, turtlenecks, and collared V-neck sweaters. The preppy but relaxed look is most popular with young adults and Millennials, but anyone can pull off the classics.

In the vein of knits are ponchos. This was an unexpected comeback to me as most ponchos are associated with hippies. However, there can be a chic element to these that many of us may have missed. Length also makes a difference and the longer the poncho, the more drama. They’re cute, chic, and make maneuvering easy yet warm. How did we miss this?

Writer’s Note: One of my aunts wore these nonstop and I thought she looked fabulous! Ally you’re a trendsetter.

A style that is the exact opposite of soft knits is the winterized utilitarian style that is emerging from the internet and back into streetwear and high fashion. There are tons of ways to wear and dress utilitarian, but the trendiest way is currently with buckles. Lots and lots of metal buckles! Using buckles as jacket and cardigan closures is a stylish way to wear them this year.

Finally, what would winter be without layering? While you may always layer and bundle up for the winter, there’s a new emphasis on layering for the sake of fashion and warmth. Let those layers show! Think about the 2000s layered tank tops that were almost as long as tunics…. now pick one in a trendy color and layer it with a sweater, bottom of the tank sticking out of course. Put this top combo over a shapely skirt to add dimension and interest and you are now layering like a chic model.

Speaking of models, I’ll try to have some real photos for you in the next trend edit, though I cannot promise Vogue, I will do my best to strut these looks. Cheers!
